Frequently Asked Questions...

Can oil paints work on wood?

I don't know whether the paint will be absorbed or not. I found a piece of wood from my dads workshop...

Answer:

Oil paint will definitely work on wood (wooden panels were the first surfaces used for oil paint) but it needs to be primed first. The easiest way is to put on several coats of acrylic gesso, sanding between each coat with 220 grit sandpaper. If gesso is too expensive, you could use acrylic or latex-based house paint instead. After a few good coats, it should be safe to work on. If you didn't prime the wood first, the oil would be absorbed and the wood could warp or rot and the paint could crack or flake off.
