Tips On Developing Your Trade System

Once you have a fully tested trading system you are ready to trade. The last piece in the puzzle is to select a good broker. Most markets require that all traders place their trades through a broker. There are really only two types of brokers to choose from: the full-service broker and the discount broker.

At the key to the heart of finding a reliable broker means seeking one that suits you and your individual trading style.

Here are some questions you should consider when choosing your broker - either online or full-service.

1. What are the real commission rates?

The commonly advertised rates for brokers is one that will vary between $0 to $40 per individual trade for an online broker and then the costs may be upwards of $100 (This could be 1-2% of the size of the trade) when you are seeking to access a full-service venture. That is why it is so helpful to explore the advertised rate and see what it is truly applies to. In a great many cases there will be higher brokerage fees for different trading instruments and those traders selecting a "live" broker on the phone. The fact remains that one might find the advertised commission rate might not actually ever apply to the individual types of trades you opt to place.

It is helpful to look towards a full-service firm and remember the commission rate is negotiable based upon how much business you may be running via the account. That is why it is critical to negotiate with the firm and seek the best rate possible for your situation. This will aid in lowering expenses.

2. Are there any other extra fees?

A great many number of companies (this includes online and full-service) charge a number of additional hidden fees which can seriously dump additional significant costs to each and every trade. Some charges one needs to be quite aware of include those dealing with the transfer of funds to and from your account, insurance costs, administration fees, late payment penalties, and various other fees. When you need to see the fees, seek to double check the fine print or email for additional details.

3. Can a member trade in multiple markets and, if this is the case, what will the commissions be?

When your trading progresses significantly, you might decide to trade in different markets. It will be much better to stick with a broker you have a trusting relationship. This means you need to plan ahead and select a broker that can service your needs as you grow.

4. Will they pay you interest on the balance of uninvested cash in your account?

It is possible to find both online and full-service brokers will pay interest within the amount of 3-4%. Such numbers can be quite appealing.

5. Is a large deposit necessary for the start?

Beware of high minimum balances required to open an account. While some companies have good rates, you may need $50,000 to start. It's a lot of money to invest with a company you haven't traded with before. Typically full-service firms will require more capital to start an account than a discount online service.

6. How reliable can the service be when it delivers services?

The speed and reliability of online trading must be examined with extreme seriousness. There are tales of clients that have lost thousands of thousands of dollars due to systems faults that led to clients being unable to sign in. Such a scenario would be an unacceptable disaster. As such, it is wise to stick with those trading services which have backup systems in place such as phone trading options.

When you seek an online broker, it is best to look towards an offering of a Straight Through Processing. That means the trades are on the market as soon as they are produced. Among some discount brokers, the trades are placed manually so the trade may not be actioned until sometime after it has been placed.

As such, they are not actioned until after being placed.

7. Do they offer any automatic features?

Always seek to examine the extras the company may put forth. Consider your options with these extras as they may end up complementing your trading style quite nicely. Conversely, if there are features that you will never use dismiss them since, well, you will never use them.

One feature I quite like is automated stop losses. This feature enables me to set my exit point and it's automatically triggered. Another one to look out for is 'contingent order' - do they allow you to place conditions that must be met before an order is automatically placed? For example, if the share price breaks out from your specified buy point of $12, you might like to set an automatic buy trigger.

Such common automated extras will often be more applicable to online brokers although they do possess value with full service brokers under certain conditions as well.
